Intralinks is one of the biggest names in the
industry with a long history that goes all the way back to 1996. They prefer to
work with large corporations, some of which are in the Fortune 100, and
therefore tend to focus on large deals. It would be a good choice for handling
overly complicated deals if you have the budget for it. The prices they charge
are higher than the industry average and, to be frank, after reviewing some of
the other data rooms out there it became evident that you could find a data room
with the same features for much less.
Intralinks Dealspace Review
When we take a look at security, it is unclear
which innovative features you get in return for the higher price. There seem to
be features such as watermarks, data encryption, and two-factor authentication,
but you can find such features in virtually any data room out there. It is also
unclear how Intralinks defends you documents against internal security threats.
While they do allow the administrator to restrict or grant access to on an
individual basis, there is nothing that would protect your documents against
camera based attacks. One of the newest and most innovative features found in
some data room is “Fence View” which serves as a physical barrier between the
document and the user. After all, if someone really wants to steal a piece of
information simply taking a picture of the computer screen is not a problem.
We touched a little bit on the granular access permissions above and the level of granularity offered by Intralinks does not do enough to facilitate complex deals such as M&A transactions and due diligence. Some modern data rooms offer innovative features that let achieve greater granularity be restricting or granting information located within the documents themselves. For example, let’s say you upload a spreadsheet into the data room. You would like participants to be able to view the spreadsheet, but not the formulas that were used during the calculation. This is the type of granularity that is required to conduct M&A transactions in the twenty-first century.
As far as customer support is concerned, they do a better job than most other brands out there. They offer 24/7 support in multiple languages via phone or email, but, interestingly enough, there they will not give you a free demo of the data room. For the prices that they charge, you deserve to know what you are getting in return and, without a free demo, you are really buying a mystery item. While they list all of the features of the data room on their website, it would be very helpful to have somebody walk you through the setup, show you all of the bells and whistle and answer your questions. This is something that a lot of data room providers offer nowadays and it is very unusual that a big name like Intralinks does not provide it. But they do offer a free 30-day trial so you can input your data and try to figure it all out for yourself.
